Lincoln Symposium:

We are approaching the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln in 2009, and as a result, his life and times are being re-examined. We are excited to announce that the Indiana Bar Foundation will host a symposium for We the People teachers September 27th and 28th. The Symposium will be led by two Lincoln scholars, who will guide discussion with participants over the two days.

William Bartelt has studied the Indiana phase of Lincoln’s life for over 30 years, and is currently finishing a book on Lincoln’s life during this time. Dr. James F. Simon is the Martin Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus at New York Law School. Dr. Simon recently released his latest book Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney: Slavery, Secession and the President’s War Powers. The book is a debate between Taney and Lincoln about the future of our democratic republic. Participants will be asked to prepare in advance by reading materials from both presenters and then will take part in guided discussion.

Participants will receive one night’s lodging and meals along with the intellectual exercise in examining our 16th President. If you would like to attend this symposium, please contact Stan Harris, sharris@inbf.org or 800-279-8772 at the Indiana Bar Foundation. Space is extremely limited, so contact the Foundation early.
