Justice Richard M. Givan LRAP Matching Gift Program
The Indiana Supreme Court has honored former Indiana Chief Justice Richard M. Givan with an endowed fund at the Indiana Bar Foundation. The Justice Richard M. Givan Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) received an initial contribution of $25,000 for immediate use and will match new money raised by the Bar Foundation for the endowed fund up to a total of $175,000. This matching opportunity maximizes the funding available to law school graduates in civil legal aid, but is only available through November 1, 2011.
Additional donations are now being accepted for the Justice Richard M. Givan Loan Repayment Assistance Program. Donors who prefer to make a contribution via credit card may contact the Bar Foundation at 317-269-2415 or donate online.
The Loan Repayment Assistance Program was originally established in 2006 as a statewide loan assistance program for law school graduates employed in non-profit organizations dedicated to serving the civil legal needs of low-income individuals and families in Indiana. This program is designed to assist attorneys who have incurred significant educational debt so they can work in civil legal aid programs.
Justice Givan, who died in 2009, was known for a lifetime of public service including 26 years as a jurist on the State Supreme Court, serving 13 of those years as Chief Justice. Justice Givan’s former law clerks were instrumental in renaming the fund the Justice Richard M. Givan Loan Repayment Assistance Program and have already made initial contributions toward the matching funds provided by the Supreme Court.
Donors wishing to make contributions for the Justice Richard M. Givan Loan Repayment Assistance Program via credit card may contact the Bar Foundation at 317-269-2415 or donate online. Checks may be made payable to the Indiana Bar Foundation, with a designation to the “Justice Givan LRAP,” and should be mailed to 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 400, Indianapolis IN, 46204. If you wish to make a gift in another form, please contact the Bar Foundation first to ensure the gift is eligible for the match.
“Naming the loan repayment assistance program for Justice Givan is just a small way to recognize his lifelong contributions to the state of Indiana, especially within our justice system,” stated Charles Dunlap, Executive Director of the Indiana Bar Foundation. “It’s extremely fitting to have a program which helps enable law school graduates to work in the civil legal aid field named after Justice Givan. We’re excited by the opportunity provided by the Supreme Court to match contributions to the Justice Richard M. Givan Loan Repayment Assistance Program, as the increased funds will assist more individuals to assure access to justice for all Hoosiers.”
